Cash for small-scale farmers
President Danilo Medina handed over RD$200 million to 40 small-scale rural producer associations yesterday, Tuesday 23 February 2016. This represents half of the financing required for the Pro Rural Center East Project. The funds will benefit around 16,000 families including 3,000 women and 2,000 young people across 20 provinces.
The ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace and each of the associations now has an account at the Banco de Reservas, the government bank, which will administer the funds together with the Dominican Agribusiness Council (JAD).
The project is part of a nationwide rural economic development program that is being implemented with funding from the International Agricultural Development fund and its government counterpart.
Multilateral Cooperation (DGECOOM) director general Antonio Vargas Hernandez, Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo, Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development Juan Temistocles Montas, and Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez were present at the ceremony alongside President Medina.
