Caribbean Series opens in Santo Domingo
The Leones del Escogido takes to the field to defend their home advantage and win the 2016 Caribbean Series Championship. The event opens at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium in Santo Domingo this evening, Monday 1 February 2016. The DR has won the 58-year old series on 19 occasions.
“We are proud to be representing the country once again,” said Leones executive vice president Jose Miguel Bonetti. The Escogido has played in four Caribbean Series and won three of them.
“On this occasion, it’s been easy to assemble the team because everyone wants to be involved, all the guys want to play. The hardest part is having to leave out guys who helped lead us to the title, but we’re not just talking about Leones del Escogido here but the whole Dominican Republic,” general manager Moises Rojas Alou told ESPN.
Alou announced that catcher Carlos Paulino from Gigantes del Cibao, Diory Hernandez and Zoilo Almonte (both from Licey) and pitchers Wirfin Obispo, Edwar Cabrera and Adrian Salcedo would be joining the Dominican team.
