Book ‘Pages Sosúa – against forgetting’ is published
Recently, in the great hall of the cultural center Ramón Oviedo at the Ministry of Culture in Santo Domingo a book titled ‘Pages Sosúa – against forgetting’ was presented to the press and notables. The author is July Josefine Wellisch Miller. She was born in Sosúa in 1956 and attended the Cristóbal Colón school in Sosúa, later this school was renamed to Colegio Luis Hess.
The book was published to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jewish colony in Sosúa. The book contains 36 personal stories of survivors of the Nazi persecution in Europe, who were welcome in the Dominican Republic in 1940 and were able to settle in Sosúa. Some of these stories have been told by the protagonists themselves, other stories were told by their descendants. At the presentation this particular work, the Israeli ambassador Sr. Daniel Saban, Sr. Jose Antonio Rodriguez representative of the Ministry of Culture and the Deputy Minister Patrimonio Cultural Sr. Federico Henríquez Gratereaux and members of the Jewish community were present. With this book and these 36 testimonies the writer wants to contribute to not to forget this particular history of Sosúa as a refuge and safe haven for persecuted Jews during the second world war.
The book was already presented to the public in park Mirador in Sosúa in September 2015, but now also in the capital city, Santo Domingo.
