Birth rate down

According to Central Electoral Board (JCE) statistics, the Civil Registry offices registered 1,063,984 people between 2010 and September 2016.

Of this total, 45,127 were foreigners, equivalent to 4.24%. A total of 751,723 births were registered by the National Statistics’ Office (ONE) between 2010 and 2014, with the peak year being 2011 with 158,955 births, and a decrease to 138,224 in 2014.

According to ONE, the birth statistics were 21.2 per 1,000 inhabitants back in 2010, and this figure has been dropping with 20.95 in 2011 and 20.7 in 2012. For 2013 it was 20.38, 20.07 in 2014, 19.78 in 2015 and 19.49 in 2016.

The figure is projected to decline to 18.35 for every 1,000 inhabitants by 2020 and that the downward trend will continue throughout the decade.

The JCE states that 2014 saw a peak in foreigner registration numbers, with 8,261, as a result of the migratory reform. In 2015 it was 7,564.
