AIRD confirms Puerto Rican industries coming to the DR
The Dominican Republic Industries Association (AIRD) has confirmed recent reports that many Puerto Rican manufacturers are moving their operations to the Dominican Republic. AIRD executive vice president Circe Almanzar says that the association is working with the Puerto Rican manufacturers’ association to help with the moves. She said the Puerto Rico Industry Association has proposed production linkages and creation of complementary industries in the same way as twin plants were set up in the Dominican Republic in the past.
As reported in El Nacional, Almanzar said contacts began five months ago and a meeting has been scheduled for March to plan the joint development strategy that could involve initiatives underway by the Puerto Rico Commissioner in Washington, D.C. aimed at finding mechanisms for managing the Puerto Rican debt.
Almanzar told El Nacional reporters that while Puerto Rico is in economic crisis, the idea is to make the most of the opportunity to promote cooperation between the DR and Puerto Rico and perhaps Cuba in the future.
