Santo Domingo.- 90 percent of children and adolescents who have been treated at the Center for Comprehensive Care of Children and Adolescents in Psychoactive Substance since its opening in 2012, has had alcohol as a gateway to consumption of other drugs.
Meanwhile, almost 100 percent come from dysfunctional homes; 60 percent live only with their mother; 10% with their father, while others live with grandparents or uncles and the rest is on Streets.
Since December 2016, the center for their economic and physical space limitations, can only offer outpatient care for children with addictions, it has received 308 users, with an average age of 16, but five percent of received cases ranges between 10 and 13 years.
Users, about 25 percent are girls and adolescents and the rest are men.
Many leave school, others disapprove frequently and some are expelled for their conduct.
They all have in common: dysfunctional homes, families with histories of domestic violence, precarious economic situation and low education.
Although it is the first center of this kind that has the State, aimed at rehabilitating children and adolescents in the use of psychoactive substances including alcohol, lack of financial resources has prevented them from implementing the residential model, defined by its director, Rosa Flores, as one of the great weaknesses.
Flores, a medical sexual and marital therapist who directed the Center of Corrections and Rehabilitation of Women in Najayo, explains that the mission is to rehabilitate children and adolescents who have fallen in the use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol, that being legal. It is not given due attention, although it is one of the substances is doing more damage to our youth today.
85% of cases present poly drug use (alcohol, snuff and marijuana).
The common denominator is that almost all have consumed alcohol, some stay there but most migrate to marijuana.
“We seek to reintegrate his family first, because many of them have left home, school and their communities, but many of them are lost, because as we have the structure residential model to serve them, they return back to the street .
She explains that the cases where a complete rescue of children is achieved is in those who have a family willing to help. Children are taken to the center primarily through procuratorates of Children and Adolescents, for Victims of Violence, Life Line, the CESTUR and Adolescents in Conflict with the Law.
