3 million dollars made from cruise ship passengers
Amber Cover, the cruise ship harbor in Maimón is doing well. By mid-December there have already docked 16 cruise ships in this port. According to the Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr Julio Almonte, nearly 47 thousand passengers visited the port. According to the same deputy minister these passengers spend at least $ 100 per person. Last week of December almost every day a cruise ship arrived! But the overall picture is less rosy than the minister would make us believe. Not all passengers disembark. A large part of the passengers who do disembark remain at the cruise port walking among the shops and restaurants. Only a small part of the passengers are willing to take a trip to Puerto Plata, or an excursion to… for example, a cigar or rum factory. Neither Sosúa nor Cabarete had a change (yet) to take advantage of the influx of cruise ship passengers. But there’s still hope… Apparently, Maimón and Puerto Plata are attractive enough for the passengers.
