12 journalists killed in the last six months

Punta Cana.- Organized crime and political corruption are the main enemies of journalists and press freedom in Latin America, revealed the report of the Commission on Freedom of Expression published by the Inter American Press Association (IAPA).

The report was read by IAPA Freedom of the Press and Information Committee chairman Claudio Paolillo and denounces that that in the last six months 12 journalists have been killed in the area, while violence against women has increased with 84 cases in 2015.

“It is time to demand the imprescriptibility of crimes against journalists and they must be considered crimes against humanity,” Paolillo pointed out during his speech.

The report, presented as part of IAPA’s Midyear Meeting, regretted that governments are limited to make unkept promises that police, prosecutors and judges will do their job, and raised the possibility that the press can report on States where the killings occur.

Twelve journalists killed in six months? If that number is right it’s terrifying and should be world news!
