Why did Leonel Fernandez begin his campaign?
In his editorial in Diario Libre today, Monday 16 March 2015, executive editor Adriano Miguel Tejada lists the reasons why he believes former President Leonel Fernandez has chosen to announce that he is seeking the PLD candidacy in the 2016 election.
1. The attacks by convicted drug trafficker Quirino Ernesto Paulino Castillo, who has gone public using the media to accuse Fernandez of accepting “investments” from him. Tejada says: “To postpone the launch would be to continue under the threat of the drug trafficker, and up to a point, to legitimize his affirmations. With the launch of his candidacy, the answers to Quirino are now political from the position of candidate, not of a former President, which is more vulnerable.”
2. Supporters of President Danilo Medina’s re-election “were revving up for hard play and there was a need to draw Pizarro’s line in the sand”. He points out that re-election is not just a survival tactic for the governing group that feels threatened by Fernandez’s return to power, but also a negotiating tool for positioning themselves in winning electoral positions, whether the personal charisma of the candidates or with the use of the resources of those in power.
What’s more, he says that with Fernandez on the campaign trail, if supporters of re-election decide to force play with Medina, he would appear to be dividing the party, which would work in Fernandez’s favor. As a result, the rift would need to be closed in favor of Fernandez, because, as he says, “in Dominican politics two roosters do not fit in the same chicken pen.”
