Victor Estrella takes DR to Davis Cup playoffs
For the first time in tennis history, a Dominican team has advanced to the World Group Playoffs of the Davis Cup. The DR has been playing in the Davis Cup since 1989. Victor Estrella provided the Dominican Republic the needed point to defeat Ecuador’s team 3-1 at the Santo Domingo Tennis Club (La Bocha) on Sunday, 19 July 2015.
Victor Estrella gave up winning a probable medal in the Pan Am Games to instead play for the Dominican Republic in the Davis Cup that had already reached the prestigious Group I level. His sacrifice has been rewarded by this historic victory. Fired up by more than 2,000 enthusiastic fans at La Bocha, Estrella ended the 26 year wait for the Dominican Republic with a resounding victory, 4-6, 7-6 , 6-2, 6-0, over Gonzalo Escobar of Ecuador. With the win, the DR made it to the playoffs of the World Group of the Davis Cup for the first time.
Marathon man Victor wins again” headlines the Davis Cup website, referring to the match. “Having won a five-setter in three and three quarter hours on Friday, Victor Estrella of the Dominican Republic dug down deep to find more energy as he teamed up with Jose Hernandez in Saturday’s doubles match. And guess what? Estrella ended up on the winning side again, this time taking four sets as his nation established a 2-1 lead over Ecuador” as reported on the official Davis Cup website.
Earlier Estrella and Jose Hernandez playing doubles defeated Emilio Gomez and Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. But Roberto Cid would lose to Emilio Gomez, 6-2, 6-1 for the only blemish for the Dominican Republic.
The DR will now play 18-20 September in the World Group Playoffs against either Germany, Italy, Brazil, Croatia, US, Japan, Czech Republic or Switzerland.
In 2015, 126 nations have competed in the Davis Cup, the world’s largest annual international team competition. The Davis Cup is sponsored by BNP Paribas
