Many of the flights originate in various Canadian cities such as Toronto, Hamilton, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Philipsburg, Montreal, Quebec and Saskatoon, among others.

Three Hotels

In 2014 the Blue Diamond chain of hotels, a member of the Sunwing Travel Group, opened three all-inclusive hotels in Punta Cana (the Royalton, Memories and CHIC).

Punta Cana is by far one of the most popular Caribbean destinations, with some 2.9 million visitors traveling to the region by air.

Punta Cana’s international airport handled 66% of the 4.4 million tourists that traveled to the Dominican Republic last year.

The recently opened hotels are the 525-room Memories Splash Punta Cana, featuring the country’s largest water park; the 470-room Royalton Resort & Casino Punta Cana, featuring ten restaurants, nine theme bars, and a sports bar/snack bar. Also, the 340-room CHIC by Royalton, the chain’s adults-only luxury brand

Canadians

Canada is the Dominican Republic’s second largest tourism market. Last year, during the month of January alone, 105,764 Canadians traveled to the Dominican Republic by air. During 2014 a total of 706,394 Canadians visited the country, representing 29% of all international arrivals.

Pittsburgh and the Caribbean

More than 250,000 passengers are flying annually to various Caribbean destinations. Cancun (Mexico) and Punta Cana are the main attractions, said Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Airport Authority of Allegheny County.
