Tuition increases justified
The president of the Dominican Union of Private Education Institutions (UDIEP), Olga Espaillat, has justified the increase in fees for private schools for the 2015-2016 school year, saying that every year the expenses at schools increase, not only for teachers’wages but also the cost of school maintenance and equipment.
She was speaking on behalf of the 26 private schools represented by the association. The Parents’Association (Fedepadres) estimates that the increases in school tuition and fees will be between 6% and 15%.
Espaillat said the 4,845 private schools registered serve 24% of the school children in the country. She says that it costs the state around RD$70,000 per student per year in a state school, while tuition at the most expensive private school in Moca charges RD$45,000 in tuition per year.
