Tourists Arrivals Register Healthy 8.2% Growth During January-October 2015
The number of international tourists that visited the Dominican Republic by air between January-October of this year jumped by 8.2%, in comparison to the same time period in 2014. A total of 3.9 million tourists visited the country through its major international airports. Visitors from North America registered a 10.1% increase, while the number of visitors from South America jumped by 23%. Punta Cana, the D.R.’s most important tourism destination – on the country’s beautiful eastern region – received 66.3% of all visitors.
The number of North American tourists coming in through local airports registered at 2.3 million tourists. This number represents an additional 216,814 visitors from the United States (187,253) and Canada (30,737).
The flow of South American tourists also maintained a steady growth during the January-October 2015 period, with a 23.6% increase (541,000) in the number of travelers coming from this particular region. The countries with the highest number of tourists visiting the D.R. were Venezuela (32,149); Brazil (28,952); Argentina (16,650); Colombia (10,227); Chile (6,175); and Peru (5,504).
The number of arrivals from Central America and the Caribbean presented a growth of 4.6%, equivalent to 8,199 additional visitors.
Punta Cana’s international airport registered the highest number of arrivals, with an impressive 66.3% of all tourists traveling to the D.R. Santo Domingo’s Las Americas international airport received 18.4%, while the Puerto Plata terminal (on the country’s north coast) received 7.7%. The rest of the country’s international terminals (La Romana, Santiago, La Isabela and Samana, on the northeast region) received 7.6% of all visiting tourists.
During this last month of October the number of international tourists visiting the country jumped by 14.9%. Of this number, 317,000 visited the country through its international airports.
