Tourist Cluster says the Carnival Victory cruisers spent US$100 K
The Puerto Plata Tourist Cluster estimates that the tourists who arrived on the Carnival Victory cruise ship that docked in the new Amber Cove port on Tuesday, 6 October 2015, spent approximately US$100,000 in Puerto Plata during their eight-hour stay. The ship has capacity for 2,750 passengers and 1,100 crew.
Cluster president Maximo Iglesias and vice president Jose Natalio Redondo told Diario Libre they had reports that at 10am 98% of city center restaurants were filled with cruise ship tourists.
Throughout the city the visitors were welcomed with music, the local folk dance group and artisans selling their wares.
Deputy minister of tourism Julio Almonte reported that the visitors were offered 44 excursions to several places in the province of Puerto Plata and even Santiago. A second ship is scheduled to arrive next Thursday, 15 October 2015 with some 4,000 passengers on board. This will be followed by five ships in November.
