Today (Jan 19, 2015) is the official start of work on the electricity pact
SANTO DOMINGO. Today is the official start of work to obtain a consensus and consolidate the proposals from the different economic and social forces of the Dominican Republic which have the aim to achieve, within a timeframe of no more than 6 months, the signing of an electricity pact which allows the country to surpass the energy crisis which has affected it for several decades.
The participants are invited to participate in the “Act of launching of the electricity pact,” this afternoon at 5:30. The President of the Republic, Danilo Medina has been invited, although his attendance has not been confirmed.
This activity, although it takes place after several meetings which have been held by the Economic and Social and Institutional Council (CES) between the different sectors involved in the electricity issue, will be the one that will give the official touch to the efforts carried out in search of a solution of the country’s electricity crisis, which basically affects businessmen and citizens in general with long blackouts and high rates.
According to the executive director of the CES, Iraima Capriles, there are very good conditions to begin this work, because according to what she explained to the Diario Libre, the majority of the sectors that will take part in the talks already have their proposals, and she feels that the 6 month deadline is enough time in order to carry out the consolidation (of these proposals), and hold the signing of the electricity pact.
She felt that according to the methodology that they are using, the signing of the electricity pact will take place between the 17th and 20th of July, 2015.
“Starting on 19 January, we hope that the signing of the National Pact for the Reform of the Electric Sector will take place on 19 July, which is a Sunday, and so we have thought that probably it will take place on 20 July or perhaps 17 July because 19 July is a Sunday,” she indicated.
The executive director of the CES, which is the agency charged by the Executive Power for the organization of the activities necessary for the signing of the electricity pact, appeared confident that all of the actors will put the nation’s interests and the development of the country above their private interests. “We are confident that this pact is going to be the beginning of the solution of a long time problem which the Dominican Republic has had and that it is now time to be resolved,” she said.
She said that the methodology to achieve the signing of the pact is composed of 7 phases, and that the first of them is to place the different proposals on a webpage and that the first one that will be published is that of the government, and then the proposals of the other sectors.
Minister will have keynote speech
The CES executive director explained that the activity is planned for 5:30 this afternoon in the Professor Juan Bosch Auditorium of the Pedro Henriquez Ureña National Library. Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, the chairman of this social agency, and Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo will speak.
In addition, she said that the members of the Technical Support Commission will explain the methodology that will be followed for the continuation of the work after the launching of the electricity pact.
