Three months pre-trial jail for abuse to 68-year old man thrown out of the bus
A commission made up by deputy director Alejandro Volquez and Junior Fabian and communications person Melvinson Almanzar and physician Maytex Calderon from the Technical Office of Ground Transport (OTTT) visited the home of Ramon Julio Ortiz Garrido, the 68-year old man who was thrown from a public transport bus by the driver who called him a “thief.” The action was captured on a video that has gone viral after it was shared by El Caribe media group. It shows the abuse to the aging man. The OTTT says the government entity will cover all medical costs and would cover the pharmaceuticals the man regularly takes. OTTT physician Maytex Calderon examined Ortiz and said he had suffered blows to the torax and right femur.
Ortiz Garrido denied that he was thrown for not having paid the fare. He said he had told the driver he would get off because the driver was taking too long at each stop.
The Police arrested the driver identified as Tulio Cuevas who was ordered to three months preventive custody at the La Victoria jail.
Cuevas transported passengers on Route 56 that goes from Av. Independencia to the Hipodromo V Centenario in eastern Santo Domingo.
