The old cédula is only valid until next Saturday, 10 January
SANTO DOMINGO. With just a few days to go before the expiration of the old personal identification and voter registration cédula, 66% of the persons eligible to obtain the document now have one, according to numbers from the Central Electoral Board (JCE).
According to the statistics from the JCE, 4,858,164 persons have obtained the new cédula, of a total of 7,373,568 from the master list of the cédulas. Of this amount, 5,021,079 have provided their information at the different centers for issuing the new document. Of these 83,442 documents are waiting to be delivered and 80,190 requests are in the process of being issued, while some 400,000 persons have numbers and are waiting to be attended.
Although there was no work yesterday because of Three Kings Day, during the last few days the centers have been overflowing with persons trying to obtain the new document.
“All the centers that issue cédulas are providing services in record numbers and the overseas offices are overflowing with citizens,” indicated recently the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Roberto Rosario, on his Twitter account.
He cited the fact that just on 26 December some 35,000 persons were received in the offices of the Board. Among them he cited 1500 persons at the center located on Las Carreras Avenue in Santiago and 1400 at the headquarters of the Board of the National District in La Feria.
Starting today work will be renewed in the 176 centers that can issue cédulas instaledl all over the country, as well as the 75 places where the mobile units operate in different points of the country.
As a way in which to be able to provide the document to the persons who still do not have one, the JCE extended the hours of the centers that issue cédulas throughout the country from 8:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the afternoon, from Monday to Friday, on Saturdays from 8:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon and on Sundays they will work until 2:00 in the afternoon. The same hours apply to the center for special cédulas which are issued to foreigners.
Starting next Saturday, 10 January, the old cédula will no longer be valid, and according to the authorities of the JCE they will continue issuing the new cédula free of charge.
The cédula process, according to Rosario has served to clean up the master list of cédulas, which is about 7,373,568 persons, including civilians, military personnel and foreigners who have the cédula identification card.
The cédula process began last 21 April 2014 in the midst of long lines of persons who went en masse to obtain the new official document.
By means of a resolution the Plenary of the JCE as established 10 January 2015 as the last day of validity of the old cédula, so that starting on that date only the new identification and voter registration document can be used for official business.
