Teachers moving from private to public schools
According to Education Minister Carlos Amarante Baret more and more teachers are moving from the private sector to the public sector due to the salary increase for teachers working for the extended day at school.
He explained that now public school teachers earned RD$39,909 in primary schools and RD$46,028 in middle schools compared to 2012 when the equivalent figures were RD$26,259 and RD$29,930, respectively.
Baret made his remarks during a breakfast meeting with Listin Diario newspaper editors. Baret commented that there had been 15,260 new teachers appointed in the public school system between 2013 and 2015. He stated that the government spending in teacher training had increased with 131,960 scholarships provided to 87,418 teachers, which doubled the government’s investment in training from 2012 to 2014, which now stands around RD$2 billion.
Baret said that he hoped a new curriculum would be ready for the next school year.
