Sugar cane workers ask for residency help
Hundreds of Haitian sugarcane workers protested outside the Ministry of Interior and Police in Santo Domingo yesterday, Monday, 25 May 2015, asking the authorities to extend the deadline of the National Foreigner Legalization Plan that expires on 15 June 2015.
The demonstrators said that if the Dominican authorities would not agree to an extension they should make the process more flexible by reducing the number of documents required for applying for legalization. The immigrants must present proof of identity and of having lived in the Dominican Republic.
Jesus Felix, who organized the protest, accused the Haitian government of failing to deliver identity documents to more than 10,000 Haitian cane workers.
