Still time if President Medina wishes to run again
One of President Danilo Medina’s closest aides, Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta says that there is still plenty of time for Medina to seek reelection should he so wish. Peralta was answering questions from journalists in response to statements by Presidential legal adviser Cesar Pina Toribio who said that there was not enough time for the process needed in order for the President to seek another term in office. Pina Toribio held the same position during the government of former President Leonel Fernandez.
A major propaganda campaign is underway to promote the Fernandez aspirations to be the ruling party PLD candidate in the 2016 presidential election. In the election, President Danilo Medina cannot run for President unless the 2010 Constitution is changed.
Nevertheless, Peralta said that it was not just the opinion of those in government, as according to surveys the people also wanted the President to continue to run the country.
Nonetheless, he added that it was necessary to wait until the President himself decided and highlighted that there were certain constitutional limitations to him seeking re-election that would have to be discussed by the party’s Political Committee.
