Some 240,000 foreigners have registered
SANTO DOMINGO. The deputy minister of Interior and Police, Washington Gonzalez, reported yesterday that some 240,000 foreigners have joined the National Plan of Normalization with which they have surpassed the expectations of the program.
Gonzalez said: “we planned on the arrival of 210,000 persons, but the projections have been surpassed and the reality is that just like Dominicans, the foreigners waited until the last moment in order to carry out the process,” said Gonzalez during his participation on the radio program “Tu Derecho a Saber” (Your right to know).
In the area surrounding the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior and Police, located in the Juan Pablo Duarte Governmental Office Building, better known as El Huacal, the crowds of foreigners who waited until the last weeks to submit to the registration process in the National Plan of Normalization continued to come in yesterday. The persons interested in registering complained of the slowness in the reception of cases; they accused the officials of doing business with the tickets to gain entry, nevertheless the supervisors of areas stressed that during the greater part of the Plan there was very low attendance. The centers that are found in Greater Santo Domingo have seen the number of persons interested multiply itself and thus duplicating in a few hours the number of cases that they processed before in a day.
He explained that after the deadline everybody that has registered and who is still missing some document, should not fear the deadline, because they will have 45 days more starting with the date and which the deadline to complete the process ends in which they will assign him a immigration status. The plan ends on 17 June when all the offices will work until seven in the afternoon. The official warned that whoever has not deposited any type of document or who is not been registered will be considered illegal and will be deported.
