Six former police agents jailed for theft of EUR370,000 from a passenger at Las Americas airport
Maria Pena, a resident of the Netherlands, traveled to the Dominican Republic and brought around EUR370,000 with her (approximately RD$20,350,000) when she arrived at Las Americas International Airport on 26 May 2015. In violation of the law that only authorizes US$10,000 in undeclared money, she did not declare the money. However, a security officer at the airport detected it, but instead of following standard procedures, he contacted another police officer and they promptly set up an operation to steal the money from the woman when she traveled on to Santo Domingo.
The theft was detected because the group intercepted the woman near the toll station, unaware that the area is under camera surveillance.
When Pena reported the theft, the video footage was checked and the men’s role was confirmed.
Judge Julio Aybar of the province of Santo Domingo has now ordered pre-trial custody for the six former policemen accused of involvement: former lieutenant colonels Juan David Rodriguez and Elvin Lima Alcantara, former captain Pedro Cleto Rosario, former sergeants Juan Manuel Roman Mercado and Federico Armando Aybar Fortuna and corporal Luis Manuel Zapata Luciano, for violating several articles of the Dominican Penal Code and the asset laundering law.
