September 29th marks 49 years of destructive cyclone Agnes
PUERTO PLATA With its devastating fury of more than 250 kph Agnes hurricane reached Category 5 in the Shaffir-Simpson Scale, on this day 49 years ago the hurricane destroyed the communities of Enriquillo, Los Cocos, Juancho, La Oviedo Cologne, located on the south coast of the Dominican Republic.
The powerful and destructive hurricane in Pedernales destroyed the fort and the sea port, and launched several trucks of Alcoa Corporation mining company performing exploitation of bauxite deposits in the area of Cabo Rojo, but also more than hundred homes, forest, farms, and livestock left destroyed.
Recalls of the journalist Carlos Julio Feliz, when Cyclone Agnes, was in Primara, when the strong wind smashed on the school and houses nearby leaving hundreds of people homeless .
But the saddest story of this powerful hurricane, occurred in the La Colonia community (section of the city of Oviedo, province of Pedernales), where a few months old baby was found stuck in the bosom of his mother, who died after being wounded in the neck by a piece of zinc.
Also in the municipality of Oviedo, the only thing left standing was the home of the old town hall. Today, 49 years later, the survivors still have pain on their faces reflecting the terrible stories of how they lived through those hours of terror brought by the destruction of cyclone Agnes.
