Second robbery at the Las Americas airport, cargo area
The Criminal Investigation Department (Dicrim) is investigating a robbery reported at Warehouse 5 in the cargo area at the Las Americas International Airport (AILA). In December 2014 a robbery was reported with merchandise worth thousands taken. No arrests were made.
The warehouse is guarded and controlled by Customs Agency security guards and is used by several courier companies that receive goods from overseas for their customers. The investigation includes customs officers, officials from the Specialized Corps of Airport Security and Civil Aviation (CESAC) and members of Dicrim.
According to the investigators, the robbery occurred on Friday night, 29 May 2015, after the warehouse was closed. Many of the goods were waiting for import tax to be paid to the Customs Agency.
It appears that one of the two padlocks on the main door was broken to gain access.
The investigators have collected fingerprints from the scene, although they say identification may be compromised given the number of prints there by members of the Customs Agency and others. Although the warehouse is used for storage of valuable merchandise, there are no video surveillance cameras in the area.
