Report on ecological devastation in Cabarete
Cabarete residents are denouncing the destruction of the Yasica river area, especially in the area near Cuesta Barrosa by trucks loading construction materials while the authorities look the other way. The residents say the trucks are loaded during the day and at night.
They highlight that while gravel extraction from river areas is banned, as far as these people are concerned the law may as well not exist. The campaigners say that the consequences for the Cabarete beach will be serious.
The Association for the Protection of the Environment and Tourism of Cabarete and Sosua (Asoprocaso) say that the extraction is affecting the sand at Cabarete beach, and will harm tourism in the area.
Association president Michel Gay-Crosier said that the trucks could be seen entering the Veragua road to the Ricardo Linares gravel site every day.
