Regularization cards should all be issued in two weeks
Deputy Minister, Washington Gonzalez , of the Ministry of Interior and Police estimates that in around two weeks the Ministry will have completed issuing the majority of the identity cards to foreigners who registered under the National Foreigner Legalization Plan. Gonzalez said that to date, 22,000 foreigners have been issued cards. He assured that the remaining 227,000 individuals who qualified for the identity cards will be serviced.
In the National District, between 800 and 900 cards are being issued a day; Gonzalez expects that number will soon increase to 1,200 issuances per day.
He said that there was no need to increase the number of people working in the 25 offices around the country but that they would be opening for longer hours.
Gonzalez refused to indicate when the deportations may begin, despite pressure from the media to reveal the information. The Deputy Minister would only say that he would send a report to President Danilo Medina when all the cards had been issued and would await further instructions in regards to any actions ordered by his superiors.
