Reelection proposal almost ready
The Commission set up by the PLD Political Committee to draft the bill to reform the Dominican Constitution in order to permit presidential reelection will meet with the deputies who support former President Leonel Fernandez today, Tuesday 28 April 2015. Tomorrow, Wednesday 29 April they will do the same with the senators.
According to a source inside Congress the meeting is being held to explain what the commission is proposing and what has been discussed with former President Fernandez to the opponents of re-election.
The completed bill is due to be sent to Congress this week via the Senate.
For approval, it needs the votes of two thirds of the National Assembly or 148 of 212 legislators in both houses.
According to initial information released by the Commission, the bill will reform Article 124 of the Constitution, which bans re-election. A paragraph will be added that establishes that the President elected for the 2012-2016 term can only run for re-election once, as reported in Listin Diario.
