Prosecutor defines bus incident as a kidnapping
Prosecutor Olga Dina Llaverias has defined as a kidnapping the case involving 12 drivers who were arrested accused of threatening to burn a bus taking 50 students from the Colegio Evangelico Episcopal in Andres, Boca Chica to the Santo Domingo Book Fair. The bus drivers were protesting that the school had not used their services. If the case is heard as a kidnapping, the men, who are currently under arrest, could face up to 30 years in jail.
This decision led the defense lawyers to challenge the judge and call for a replacement. They argue the men should be tried for a mere traffic violation under Law 241.
The drivers are Eduardo Salvador Fersola Guilamo, Francisco Tejeda Marte, Josue Castillo Santana, Felix Manuel Meran Garcia, Luis Pineda Castillo, Daniel Bautista Espinal, Franklin de Leon, Rafael Poleon Feliz, Alfredo Sencion Rosado, Juan Carlos Javier Aquino, Yoryi Luisa and Luis Rafael Castillo Luis of the Boca Chica Minibus Drivers’ Association (ASOCHOMBCA) and the Boca Chica Transporters’ Union (SICHOPROBOCH).
