Proposal for lower wages only for new employees
The president of the National Employers Council (Copardom) Joel Santos has clarified that only new jobs would be offered with lower wages under the proposal for a re-classification of wages. The business sector is pushing for companies to be allowed to hire personnel at a lower minimum wage bracket according to their assets. The rates are not designed for current employees, but only for new employees. He denied that employers would fire people to hire others at a lower cost.
Santos said the proposal is aimed at helping the micro-business sector and stated that Dominican labor law prevents employers from reducing wages and companies are discouraged from making arbitrary dismissals due to the high cost of severance payments.
