Politicians warn SCJ and Attorney General regarding judicial crisis
SANTO DOMINGO. Political leaders and legislators alerted the Supreme Court of Justice and the Justice Department, so that they avoid the continuation of damage to the credibility of justice through the public conflict between those who direct these institutions.
Luis Abinader, a presidential hopeful for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), proposed the restructuring of the Supreme Court of Justice because it was his understanding the judges have acted as political leaders.
“This is not an argument regarding justice, this is a political argument that they are having,” he noted.
He criticized that a crisis in the Dominican judicial system has been provoked, due to the behavior that the judges have shown “which disqualified them once they wrote on Twitter an opinion against the decision which was appealed; this is unheard of, never before seen in this country.”
Deputy Minou Tavarez said that “the internal crisis of the governments party is taking place, what we will have to see is how these tendencies inside the PLD are dealing with this in regard to the political aspirations for 2016.”
The PLD deputy Demostenes Martinez, said that he felt that “this damage to the justice system of the Dominican Republic cannot be allowed to continue, and this clash should cease. The necessary mechanisms are there in order for this public confrontation not to continue. These are painful and regretful incidents.” He said that there is the political issue in these problems “because it is an essential component of how they are handling those issues through the media.”
The spokesman for the PRM bloc of deputies, Nelson Arroyo, said that “what we are seeing in the Judiciary and justice system as a clash of powers where the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court defends the Leonel Fernandez sector and on the other hand tries to place the Attorney General in this sector of Danilo Medina. But with sincerity it is that the Dominican Justice is going through a bad moment, which the Chief Justice of the SCJ should understand.”
A call for a dialogue
The presidential hopeful of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Francisco Javier Garcia, warned of the danger for Dominican democracy that the emergence of a perception of disbelief in the performance of the Judicial Power would represent. He suggested that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice, Mariano German Mejia and to the Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito, should converse in order to find “an understanding between these two good and honest professionals, who, I can assure you, have the best intentions.”
