Police agents accused of killing, contracted car theft
Two Police agents and a former army man are the main suspects in the murder of Franchesca Lugo Miranda on Friday, 21 August 2015 at midnight. The 19-year old communications student was accompanying her boyfriend who had closed his bar and was headed home when he and his brother confronted two men who tried to steal their Honda Civic in the El Cacique neighborhood in Santo Domingo.
The suspects have been named as corporals Emilio Alexander Suazo Suazo and Jose Manuel Pina Marte, a former policeman, Joan Manuel Genao de la Rosa, and a former army man, Jonathan Marmolejos Flores. Marmolejos is accused of offering the men RD$100,000 to steal a vehicle similar to the Honda Civic in which brother Greison was driving home that evening. The suspects were arrested by Police Central Criminal Investigations Department (Dicrim) officers, who say they are still on the trail of another suspect identified only as “El Chapeao”.
Police spokesman General Maximo Baez Aybar said that the suspects have admitted to the crime, saying the target of the armed robbery was the Honda Civic 2008 driven by Greison Dario, on the orders of Marmolejos Flores.
Baez said that after the crime, Suazo Suazo went to the Haina police station claiming to have been the victim of a robbery. The investigators, nevertheless, determined that he had lost the firearm, which was registered in his name.
On the day of the murder, Franchesca Lugo Miranda was driving home with her boyfriend Melvin Tapia Diaz in the Chevrolet GMC used as a mobile bar for their Plan B Prozen business. Melvin’s brother, Greison Dario Tapia Diaz was driving a Honda Civic. The brothers had concluded the day’s work at their business on the stretch of Av. 30 de Mayo known as “El Maleconcito” and were on their way home when Greison was intercepted by the thieves who were driving a gold-colored Toyota Corolla. His brother Melvin went to his rescue, using a Taurus 9-mm gun he legally carried and fired at the attackers, who returned the shots. Lugo Miranda was fatally injured in the crossfire and died immediately. The Police reported that 23 shell casings were found at the site of the crime.
