Plantains could cost RD$30 each
It is normal for a plantain to sell for RD$20 each in supermarkets these days, but the bad news is that the cost of preparing “mangu” could go up even more.
The president of the Dominican Republic National Traders and Business Owners Association, Antonio Cruz Rojas, attributed the high price to shortages caused by the drought that affected the DR for several months, and is now over. Cruz said the high price is not due to speculation.
“The Ministry of Agriculture has been incapable of implementing a strategy even though they knew there was a drought, they know about consumption needs but did not make any plans to prevent this,” he told El Caribe. He said corrective measures could have been taken.
