Pediatricians worried over “candy cigarettes” for children
SD. The Dominican Society of Pediatricians made public yesterday their worries over the sale of candies that imitate the shapes and brands of cigarettes in stores located in the Nuevo Mercado and Villas Agricolas.
The president of the entity, Rodolfo Soto Ravelo, expressed his worry for any type of sales that induces a child through the subtle use of candy or a caramel, but also incites in a secondary manner the use of toxic or unhealthy substances,
Soto Ravelo said that those sweets “are leading children at an early age to begin to become accustomed to the habit of smoking, which is prejudicial to the health at all ages, and while at a younger age one begins to smoke, there are greater repercussions to his health and in the co-morbidity which the use of tobacco generates.
Philip Morris, uneasy
The Department of Corporate Affairs of Philip Morris said, through a letter, that the sale of those products is “irresponsible, deceitful and contrary to the law.” They express their worry that “this type of commerce wants to associate the Marlboro brand with criminal actions,” since the company and the brands that they represent, rigorously comply with the regulation established in the country and internationally. The director of corporate affairs, Manuel Cabral, tied the sales of these suites to criminal activities.
“This type of product is one more example of the illegality experienced in many sectors. In this sense, for approximately three years, the sector of cigarettes has been formally complaining about the accelerated increase which the illegal commerce has had an which is doing harm to the Dominican state, society and the industry, interview that this merchandise does not comply with the rigorous norms regarding security, hygiene, health and tax commitments,” he said that “regrettably that now contraband has reached those levels, making evident the need to extend efforts in order to do away with networks of organized crime.”
