Parents get their baby back
On 8 March 2015 Bertina Ciprian of Los Algarrobos in Villa Altagracia gave birth to a baby boy by C-section at the Vinicio Calventi public hospital. On the same day, her father died at the same hospital. She was told the baby was born with respiratory problems. On 10 March she was sent home and she left the baby at the hospital because of his respiratory issues. When she returned a week later she was told the baby had died. When the father went to the hospital to claim the baby’s body, an investigation was opened. On 12 March, the hospital had authorized the baby’s release. On that day, one of the hospital nurses, Olga Grullon, took the baby, helped by a second nurse, Luz Perez. Once the investigation began, Grullon returned the baby to the center, and the baby was taken to Conani, the government child welfare institution.
“Finally I get to know you,” said the mom, when she saw her baby for the first time since giving birth 26 days earlier.
The nurses have been suspended from the hospital and the mother says she is considering legal action against Grullon.
In an earlier news report, the nurse claimed that the mother had authorized her to take the baby.
