Owners dispute lands next to San Felipe Fort
The opening concert at the new Puerto Plata San Felipe Fort amphitheater is scheduled for August 2015. Now, El Caribe is reporting that the lands around the fort and La Puntilla on the Malecon were sold irregularly when the Bienes Nacionales (National Assets) department was headed by Elias Wessin Chavez, despite the area being a national heritage site. Puerto Plata mayor Walter Musa said the “purchases” would not be honored, as the land was municipal property. The case is in the courts.
The area was declared a National Monument by Law 492 of 1969. The ruins were also declared an Architectural Monument by Law 552 in 1973.
The new amphitheater will have capacity for 5,100 people. It was designed by architect Sara Garcia and its construction is being headed by Puerto Plata engineer Kuky Silverio.
