Nuisance 911 calls still at record levels
According to Zoraima Cuello, Deputy Minister of the Presidency and spokeswoman for the 911 National Emergency system, the service receives at least 5,000 calls a day where no one speaks at the other end of the phone. She said that although the number of nuisance calls has been reduced, the number of silent calls is still too high. She suspects that many of the calls are made involuntarily when a phone re-dials automatically when in someone’s pocket.
She said that more than 25 people had been taken to court for making rogue 911 calls and they had been fined. She also said that mobile phones from which more than five nuisance calls have been made are blocked from calling 911 in the future.
In an interview on Uno+Uno TV show on TeleAntillas, she also called on the public to give more respect to ambulances and to allow them to pass quickly.
