New underpass at 27 de Febrero and Privada
President Danilo Medina inaugurated the 464 meters underpass at 27 de Febrero with Av. Presidente Guzman (better known as La Privada) in Santo Domingo yesterday, Sunday 15 November 2015. The roadworks were carried out by the Odebrecht and Grupo Estrella construction companies at a cost of US$12-US$13 million. The underpass eliminates the need for the traffic lights at the intersection and is expected to reduce congestion of north-south traffic on Av. Nunez de Caceres.
The Ministry of Public Works estimates that the new tunnel will cut driving times by 15 minutes for drivers using the western end of 27 de Febrero Avenue and save RD$770,000 in running costs.
The Duarte Corridor II roadwork project will be complete once a tunnel is built under Plaza de la Bandera, also under Av. Isabel Aguiar, and the 6 de Noviembre Highway is redesigned.
