New Metro Line moves people out of their homes, Santo Domingo
According to Leonel Carrasco of the Metro Office (Opret), the construction of the extension of the second line of the Metro is having a significant social impact with more than 700 families out of an estimated 1,000 being re-housed over a 12-month period at a cost of RD$700 million.
The amount assigned to this part of the expansion of the Santo Domingo metro is US$285 million, out of which RD$700 million has been allocated to moving the 1,000 families.
The families, from Gualey in the National District and Los Mina in Santo Domingo East have had to leave their homes to make room for the new line. 221 families still need to be relocated, most of which are still negotiating the terms with Opret.
Carrasco admitted that the hardest part of the job was moving people, given the social impact it will have on their lives.
