Nearly 6,000 deaths each year in DR due to myocardial infarction
Santo Domingo.– Cardiologist Fulgencio Severino said that in the Dominican Republic there are about two million people with hypertension, nearly one million suffer from high cholesterol and over 50% of the adult population is overweight.
Interviewed by journalist Federico Mendez for a Sunday program in Santo Domingo TV, doctor Severino said cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of deaths in the country.
“We are registering 6,000 deaths every year from acute miocardial infarction or ischemic heart disease,” the expert pointed out.
According to Severino, many of those deaths are preventable, with just changing people’s lifestyles and implementing health policies to reduce the pollution levels associated with cardiovascular deaths.
