Modern pig industry opens in La Vega
Industria Carnica Nacional has announced the start of sales of products from what is described as the most complete and modern pig industry in the Caribbean. The US$40 million investment in La Vega, with easy access from the Duarte Highway, will employ 600 workers at the plant, as well as creating another 2,000 indirect jobs.
Commercial director Jorge Ruiz told journalists that most of the investors are pig producers.
The plant has the capacity to slaughter 1,000 pigs in eight hours and will produce all the by-products, from sausages to cured meats and fresh pork products. The meat is being sold under the Monte Frio and El Espanol brands.
The formal inauguration of the plant is scheduled for Monday, 16 November 2015.
