Ministry of Education replaces controversial 6th grade history book
Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Education announced yesterday that it has decided to replace the sixth grade history book with a new version, following strong criticisms and accusations that it contained gaps and distortions, portrayed the Dominican Republic as racist and xenophobic, and promoted the unification of the island.
In a press release, the ministry informed that the replacement textbook would be sent to state schools around the country in the next few days.
Minister Carlos Amarante Baret said that he had not ordered the criticized version to be reproduced in this academic year 2015-2016. The ministry added that the Dominican Academy of History is being invited to an advisory committee for the selection of new social studies textbooks.
