Millions stolen in Cibao airport; eight arrested
SANTIAGO. At least eight employees of the Directorate General of Customs (DGA) stationed in Santiago are being investigated by the Justice Department regarding the theft of millions which they said took place in a non-specified area of the Cibao International Airport, which is located in the Uveral section of the municipality of Puñal, in the province of Santiago.
The case was confirmed by the District Attorney in Santiago, Luisa Liranzo, who told the Diario Libre, textually, “we have an open investigation against Customs employees.”
“There have been some arrests, and the investigation is still not concluded, so that for the moment that is all I can say,” added magistrate Liranzo.
Nonetheless, a source close to the investigations, who asked not to be identified, said that a team of prosecutors had been working since early in the morning today going over the videos of the security cameras in the terminal area, with the aim of finding clues that will lead them to those responsible for the theft.
Although the amount of money taken has not been quantified by the authorities, it is in the millions, according to the source.
This case is the second scandal in the DGA that has been registered in the city of Santiago over the last few years.
It will be recalled that in July 2010, eight persons were arraigned on charges of a fraud of more than RD$100 million pesos, trafficking in high-powered firearms as well as other merchandise.
On that occasion, those implicated did not receive definitive sentences.
