Medical Tourism on the Rise in the Dominican Republic

The Ministries of Tourism and Health, along with the Dominican Medical College and the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic, recently signed an agreement to promote health tourism in the country.

Punta Cana, on the country’s eastern region and one of the most important Caribbean tourism destinations, is currently building the first hospital that will receive international patients traveling to the country for medical assistance and procedures.

In 2014 Punta Cana’s international airport handled 2.9 million tourists, mainly from the United States, Canada and Europe, placing it on the list of the top 10 airports in Latin America.

The most important goal of this fast-growing initiative is to provide the proper legal framework that will regulate all medical tourism activities in the Dominican Republic. Another feature will be to provide national and international investors with important tax incentives to stimulate this fast-growing industry.

The recently established Dominican Association of Health Tourism is bringing together various certified hospitals and professionals who frequently receive patients from other nations.

The Puntacana Health Center

One week before the signing of the agreement, construction began on the Puntacana Health Center, which will provide health tourism services to international patients.

The hospital is being built by the Hospitals International, a U.S.-based company specializing in the construction of health centers throughout the Americas, and will feature emergency rooms, a diagnostic center, imaging, and a center for advanced surgeries.
