La Romana on alert for influenza “A”
SD. The authorities of the Ministry of Public Health declared an alert in the public and private health centers of La Romana, after confirming the positive lab test results for the type “A” flu virus carried out on a patient in that city.
Given the situation, the authorities called on the population to wash their hands frequently and well with soap and water, as well as covering their noses and mouths upon sneezing in order to prevent contagion through the spread of the flu virus which is going around right now.
The patient on whom the test was carried out presented a serious respiratory infection.
Regarding this case, the Infectologist Doctor Clemente Terrero, said that the alert should be at the national level, because they are dealing with a respiratory illness that spreads rapidly.
He said that the influenza “A” virus is similar to the AH1N1 virus that several years ago caused havoc in the country.
He warned that the disease is fatal if people do not take preventive measures and, above all, in patients with chronic illnesses, heart problems, asthmatics, chronic pulmonary infections, bronchiectasis and sickle cell disease.
The persons at the highest risk are children, the elderly and pregnant women. This virus appears with symptoms such as a serious respiratory infection and includes fever, coughing, sneezing, headaches and a general malaise.
