January is the period of most earthquakes in Dominican Republic
PUERTO PLATA According to the records of the Institute of Seismology of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), January has become the period in which the largest number of earthquakes recorded in the country with 380 in last four years and three days.
According to the testimony offered by the seismic analyst Felix Martinez Guzman, some of these earthquakes have caused damage to homes, schools and roads, since the first three days of this 2015 have been recorded six top three degrees in different parts of the country, including one of 4.7 on Friday southeast of the town of Luperon in the west of Puerto Plata, earthquake was felt across much of the Cibao region earthquakes.
Martinez Guzman, said the increased seismic activity was recorded in 2010 when after January 12th the earthquake 7.3 degrees near Port au Prince, Haiti occurred, which killed more than 200,000 people and destroyed much of the city.
In the same month, 59 earthquakes occurred more than three degrees in different parts of the country including five over four degrees, felt by the population, however, in January 2011 only 18 earthquakes occurred in Puerto Plata and Samana.
Also in January 2012, 120 earthquakes were recorded including one of 5.4 in María Trinidad Sánchez (Nagua), exactly on 23, damaging schools, destruction of glassware malls and creating shock in all provinces of the Cibao region.
According to Seismograph Institute of the State University the following year (2013) in January only occurred 60 earthquakes, but none was more than four degrees, but in January 2014 – 123 tremors were recorded including three over four degrees, mostly felt in Puerto Plata, Hato Mayor and María Trinidad Sánchez.
