Italian Embassy closes in Santo Domingo
The Embassy of Italy in Santo Domingo officially closed its doors on 31 December 2014. Diario Libre reports that the Embassy placed a notice on their web page. The website informs that anyone requiring embassy services in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Kitts & Nevis should contact the Embassy of Italy in Panama. Jamaica will be served through the Italian Consulate in Miami.
The Italian government has said it will also provide services through the European Union offices in Santo Domingo in the future and that it will be responsible for consular paperwork that is currently being handled by the Italian consulate in Panama.
Diario Libre reported that the embassy closure means that more than 8,500 Italians who registered as living in the DR and around 100,000 Italian tourists who visit every year are now without representation.
