Internet use increases, despite high cost
The cost of using the Internet in the Dominican Republic is among the highest in the region, but nevertheless, penetration of the service continues to increase. According to a study “Use of the Internet in Latin America” presented by Carlos Jimenez of Datanalisis in an interview with Listin Diario, 61% of the Dominican population has access to the Internet, compared to the 52% average for the Latin American region. He says that the study showed that Colombia and the DR are the two countries in Latin America with greatest Internet growth and penetration. According to Jimenez, this is because of the increase in smart phone use: 42% of Dominicans connect to the Internet using a smart phone, compared to the Latin American average of 39%.
Jimenez added that 82% of Internet users read the news. He said the high percentage of Dominicans who are interested in keeping up to date with the news is above the regional average.
