ID cards for foreigners who registered to legalize their status
The Ministry of Interior and Police says that within 45 days after the expiration of the National Foreign Legalization Plan (PNRE) IDs will be delivered to more than 70% of applicants who have qualified to legalize their status in the country. “We have the logistics, we have the staff trained for this and all is running as planned,” said deputy minister Washington Gonzalez. He said that so far more than 240,000 people have registered to regularize their status. He said weekly announcements would be made on the foreigners who have completed the process. Gonzalez said that the sugarcane cutters of Haitian origin who are retired on state pensions would qualify for legalization, despite not having Haitian identification. This will benefit around 2,000 people. He said this is a special case in which the retirement plan cards will be used as identification. Jesus Felix, a lobbyist for another 1,600 sugar cane cutters who have requested but not yet obtained their state pensions, said they should also benefit from regularization.
