Heart attack statistics
According to Dr. Fulgencio Severino, head of the Cardiology Unit at the Salvador B. Gautier Social Security Hospital, there are between 14,000 and 15,000 heart attacks in the country every year, with around 5,500 deaths. 30% of heart attacks affect people under the age of 50.
The doctor said that the government should give more support to enable all public hospitals to join the National Program of Coronary Pharmacological Repercussion that is currently available at four hospitals with the support of Promese, the governmental essential drugs program, and which has saved the lives of 123 patients this year.
He said that if patients are given the right medicine within the first 12 hours of suffering a heart attack the risk of death is reduced to only 4% when the average is between 11 and 20%.
The hospitals that have been taking part in the program since 2014 as part of a pilot project are the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital, the Francisco Moscoso Puello Public Hospital, the Armed Forces Hospital in Santo Domingo and Jose Maria Cabral y Baez Public Hospital in Santiago.
Dr. Severino said that given the experience of this pilot program it is estimated that 1,700 heart attack patients need treatment within the first 12 hours and that now it is important to roll it out to the other hospitals, which will cost RD$95 million.
