Haitians smuggled into Dominican mountains ´en masse´
Santiago.- Santiago archbishop Freddy Breton on Monday said undocumented Haitians have entered en masse in recent weeks and demanded respect for Dominican Republic´s sovereignty.
The prelate´s complaint comes just days after representatives from south Santiago community organizations in the also reported the entry of illegal aliens from the neighboring country to the cities of Santiago, Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata in addition to the east region.
Breton said the government must defend the country´s sovereignty and enforce immigration law in Dominican territory, while respecting dignity and human rights.
The archbishop, interviewed on the Catholic Church´s Tele Union channel, said the Haitians are smuggled into the country through the mountains of San Jose de las Matas, Santiago province and other surrounding areas. “Look at what they´re doing in La Sierra (mountains), the Haitians are being taken into La Sierra en masse. And they are abusing many of these people.”
